Letting out the Anger
When you come across someone who is really upset and/or ready to explode try this. It is one of the best ways that I have ever developed to let out angry feelings and diffuse difficult situations. I have used it for decades. - It works for young and old alike;)
Materials:
Long cardboard tubes (from gift wrapping paper)
A sturdy immovable object (preferably outside) which will not get damaged when it is hit by the cardboard tubes (eg. Fence post, railing, tree trunk)
Procedure:
1) Give the angry person a tube (give more tubes to bigger stronger individuals who are likely to decimate each tube in a single swing) and take one for yourself.
2) Go out to the immovable object and offer to let the angry person take the first swing.
3) Offer to let the angry person take a few more swings.
4) Ask if you can have a turn.
5) Assuming that you are granted a turn, take a swing at the immovable object using your cardboard tube.
6) Make some positive (enthusiastic) comments such as, “Wow! That feels good! Let me try it again!
7) If the angry person lets you have another turn (the anger has already started to abate) enjoy taking another swing and then give the angry person the opportunity to take another swing.
8) Keep taking turns until the tubes are spent. (If the angry person decimates the tube before you do, offer yours).
9) Assuming the pent up anger has been released, go do some other activity together or alone – now is not the time for a lecture or punishment.
10) On days when things are really bad feel free to say something to the effect of, “It looks like you are having a really tough time right now…We better get some extra tubes;)”
